Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear is a fundamental component of Qatar’s electrical power distribution infrastructure — the critical link between Kahramaa’s high-voltage transmission network and the low-voltage distribution systems that power Qatar’s buildings, industry, and public facilities. Correct specification and installation of MV switchgear is essential for system reliability, operational safety, and regulatory compliance.
Autonex supplies MV switchgear to utility, industrial, and large commercial projects across Qatar, providing equipment from internationally certified manufacturers.
What is MV Switchgear?
MV switchgear is electrical equipment designed to switch, protect, and isolate electrical circuits at medium voltage levels — typically 6.6 kV, 11 kV, 22 kV, or 33 kV in Qatar’s power distribution system. Kahramaa distributes power at 11 kV and 33 kV across Qatar’s grid, making 11 kV the most common MV level for building and industrial substation primary switchgear.
Types of MV Switchgear
Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
Uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas as the insulating and arc-quenching medium. Extremely compact — GIS can be 70–80% smaller than equivalent air-insulated switchgear. The preferred choice for Qatar’s urban substations where space is at a premium, and for Doha’s underground and indoor installations.
Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS)
Uses air as the insulating medium. More economical than GIS for outdoor and large industrial substation applications. Requires more space but is simpler to maintain and inspect.
Vacuum Circuit Breakers
The most widely used interrupting technology in Qatar’s 11 kV switchgear. The arc is extinguished in a vacuum interrupter — fast, reliable, and maintenance-free for the life of the interrupter.
Key Applications in Qatar
- Kahramaa Distribution Substations — Primary ring main units (RMUs) and feeder pillars across Qatar’s distribution network
- Building Primary Substations — 11 kV intake switchgear for large commercial towers, malls, and hospitals in Doha
- Industrial Facilities — 11 kV switchgear for Mesaieed and Ras Laffan industrial users
- Qatar Metro — Traction power supply substations along the metro network
- Lusail City — New urban development substations serving the growing Lusail area
Kahramaa Technical Requirements
All MV switchgear connected to Qatar’s grid must comply with Kahramaa’s technical standards and specifications. Type test reports, routine test certificates, and Kahramaa approval are mandatory before energisation. Autonex supports clients through the full approval process.
