What is a Safety Relief Valve?
An SRV is an automatic pressure-relieving device actuated by the static pressure upstream of the valve. It opens rapidly (pop action) or proportionally to relieve excess pressure, and then closes automatically once normal pressure conditions have been restored. It is the last line of defence in a pressurised system.
How They Work
A typical spring-loaded SRV contains a disc held against a nozzle by a heavy, adjustable spring. Under normal conditions, the spring force is greater than the fluid pressure, keeping the valve tightly closed. If the system pressure exceeds the set pressure, the fluid overcomes the spring force, lifting the disc and allowing the fluid (gas, steam, or liquid) to vent safely.
