When a large-scale fire occurs, the water carried on a fire engine is quickly exhausted. To mount a sustained firefighting operation, Civil Defence crews require immediate access to a high-volume municipal or private water supply. Fire hydrants provide that critical connection point, making them one of the most vital components of Qatar’s public and industrial safety infrastructure.
Autonex supplies Kitemark, UL-listed, and Qatar Civil Defence approved fire hydrants and accessories for infrastructure and industrial projects across Qatar.
What is a Fire Hydrant?
A fire hydrant is an active fire protection device that connects to a pressurised water main network. It allows firefighters to connect their lay-flat hoses to draw a massive volume of water to directly fight a fire, or to connect a suction hose to refill the fire engine’s onboard tank.
Types of Fire Hydrants in Qatar
Pillar (Above-Ground) Hydrants
The most visible type, standing above the ground. Common in industrial areas, Ras Laffan, Mesaieed, and private commercial compounds. They feature multiple outlets (typically two 2.5-inch delivery valves and one 4-inch pumper connection) and a main operating nut at the top. In Qatar, they are typically the “wet barrel” type, as freezing is not a concern.
Underground Hydrants
Installed below ground level inside a protective cast-iron chamber with a surface cover. More common in Doha’s urban streetscapes to prevent vehicle impact and maintain aesthetics. Firefighters use a standpipe and key to access the water.
Standards and Connections
Standardisation is critical — arriving firefighters must know their hoses will connect instantly. In Qatar, fire hydrants must conform to:
- Qatar Civil Defence (QCDD) requirements
- BS EN 14384 for pillar hydrants or BS EN 14339 for underground hydrants
- Connections: Usually BS 336 instantaneous couplings for the 2.5-inch outlets, ensuring compatibility with Qatar Civil Defence hoses.
Placement and Installation
Hydrant placement is strictly regulated by urban planning and safety codes. Key considerations include:
- Spacing: Typically placed every 90 to 150 metres along roads, depending on the risk classification of the area.
- Clearance: Must have clear, unobstructed access for fire engines; parking in front of a hydrant is strictly prohibited.
- Water Supply: Must be connected to a water main capable of delivering the required flow rate (often 1000 to 1500 litres per minute) at adequate residual pressure.
