What is a Butterfly Valve?
A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotational valve that uses a disc mounted on a rotating shaft to control flow. When the disc is parallel to the flow direction, the valve is fully open. When rotated 90 degrees, the disc blocks the pipe bore, closing the valve. The disc always remains in the flow path, giving butterfly valves a slightly higher pressure drop than full-bore ball or gate valves.
Types of Butterfly Valves
Concentric (Resilient Seated) Butterfly Valve
The most common and economical type. The disc is centred in the pipe and seals against a rubber or elastomeric seat. Suitable for water, wastewater, and HVAC at pressures up to PN16. Widely used in Qatar\’s water distribution networks and building services.
Double Eccentric (High Performance) Butterfly Valve
The shaft is offset from both the disc centre and the pipe centreline, reducing seat wear and allowing operation at higher pressures (up to PN25 or higher). Suitable for process and industrial applications.
Triple Eccentric (Metal Seated) Butterfly Valve
The highest performance butterfly valve design. Metal-to-metal seating with three offsets provides bubble-tight shut-off at very high pressures and temperatures. Used in oil and gas, petrochemical, and high-temperature steam applications in Qatar.
