If you need to move a liquid in an industrial, commercial, or municipal setting, the centrifugal pump is almost always the answer. Accounting for over 75% of all pumps installed globally, centrifugal pumps are the undisputed workhorses of fluid transfer in Qatar — powering everything from building water supply and district cooling to oil refinery processes and desalination plants.
Autonex supplies a comprehensive range of centrifugal pumps from leading global manufacturers for projects across Qatar.
How Does a Centrifugal Pump Work?
A centrifugal pump works by converting the rotational kinetic energy of a motor into hydrodynamic energy. Liquid enters the pump near the centre of a rotating impeller. The spinning impeller vanes impart high velocity to the liquid, throwing it outward by centrifugal force into the pump casing (volute). The expanding shape of the volute slows the liquid down, converting its velocity into pressure, before discharging it into the pipeline.
Types of Centrifugal Pumps
End Suction Pump
The most common and versatile design. Liquid enters the end of the pump horizontally and discharges vertically. Used for water supply, HVAC chilled water, and general industrial transfer.
Split Case Pump
The pump casing is split horizontally, allowing the top half to be removed for maintenance without disturbing the pipework or motor. Features a double-suction impeller. Ideal for very high flow rates, such as district cooling plants and municipal water mains in Qatar.
Multistage Pump
Contains multiple impellers arranged in series on a single shaft. The discharge of one impeller feeds the suction of the next, building up very high pressure. Commonly used vertically in high-rise booster sets and boiler feed applications.
In-Line Pump
The suction and discharge flanges are on the same axis (like a valve), allowing the pump to be installed directly into a straight pipe run. Compact and space-saving for HVAC applications.
Key Applications in Qatar
- HVAC Systems — Primary and secondary chilled water circulation in Doha’s commercial buildings
- Water Supply — Boosting Kahramaa mains pressure for high-rise distribution
- Fire Protection — The main workhorse for NFPA 20 fire pump sets
- Desalination — Seawater intake and high-pressure reverse osmosis feed
- Oil & Gas — Hydrocarbon transfer and cooling water circulation in process plants
Pump Selection and Efficiency
Selecting the right centrifugal pump is critical for energy efficiency. The pump must be chosen so its Best Efficiency Point (BEP) matches the system’s actual flow and head requirements. Autonex engineers use advanced selection software to ensure the pumps we supply operate at maximum efficiency, reducing long-term energy costs.
