How Does a Solenoid Valve Work?
A solenoid valve uses an electromagnetic coil (the solenoid) to lift or lower a magnetic plunger within the valve body. When an electrical current is applied to the coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves the plunger, opening or closing the valve orifice. When the current is removed, a spring returns the plunger to its original position.
Types of Solenoid Valves
Direct Acting
The magnetic plunger directly opens or closes the main valve orifice. Operates from zero pressure up to its maximum rated pressure. Typically used for small flow rates and smaller pipe sizes.
Pilot Operated (Indirect Acting)
Uses the pressure of the fluid itself to assist in opening the main valve seal, while the solenoid only controls a small pilot orifice. Can handle much larger flow rates and higher pressures, but requires a minimum pressure differential across the valve to operate.
Normally Closed (NC) vs Normally Open (NO)
NC valves remain closed when de-energised and open when power is applied (the most common type). NO valves remain open when de-energised and close when power is applied.
