What is a Y-Strainer?
A Y-strainer is a device installed in a pipeline to mechanically remove solids from flowing liquids, gases, or steam. It derives its name from its Y-shaped configuration. The fluid flows through a cylindrical, perforated or wire-mesh screen that traps debris while allowing the clean fluid to pass through.
How to Install and Maintain a Y-Strainer
Y-strainers must be installed with the screen housing pointing downwards so that collected debris settles in the bottom of the “Y” leg, out of the main flow path.
- Horizontal Pipelines: The Y-leg must point downwards.
- Vertical Pipelines: Only suitable for downward flow, with the Y-leg pointing downwards to catch debris.
Maintenance is straightforward: many Y-strainers include a blowdown valve on the end cap, allowing the accumulated debris to be flushed out without shutting down the system or removing the screen.
Mesh and Perforation Sizing
Selecting the correct screen size is crucial. The mesh must be fine enough to catch damaging particles, but large enough not to clog too quickly or create an excessive pressure drop.
- Water systems: Typically 1.5mm to 3mm perforations
- Steam systems: Usually finer mesh, e.g., 0.8mm
- Gas and air systems: Very fine mesh to protect sensitive valves
